Dear sir,
I really recommend You to use Debian operating system. It is possible to
installit by using live talking installation image. You can choose to
install server environment or like a desktop system with some desktop
environment such as Gnome.
You can even install Debian to Virtual harddisk by using Vmware or other
virtualisation solution and You can transfer installed system to
bootable USB media such as USB flash drive or USB harddisk.
So for server related tasks and for Yours research, use Debian. Because
Speakup and Espeakup is preconfigured to work perfectly. Sure, You will
have to learn many command options to use server tools like server
administration as a professional.
It will not be easy to simulate server related tasks on Yours household
without some computers connected to The network.
But You can experiment with server tools.
