I don't agree with this blanket statement. For example, when using 
Pidgin and joining multiple rooms, I'd like an unobtrusive way to follow 
discussions in those rooms in real time and would not want to have to 
jump from room to room and then review each discussion to see what I 
missed if I missed anything at all. This is close to how Orca already 
behaves with Pidgin, and I've had similar experiences in Windows when 
using Sametime, AIM and so on.

Just because one person doesn't see the value in a feature doesn't mean 
there aren't others who would take advantage of such a feature.
