Yes, alpine can do a good job in a console with speakup if newsgroups, usenet, is what you are talking. 
RSS can be done well enough frojm thunderbird, and I have done my usenet with it for years now. 
None of the RSS extensions I have tried are accessible, or they do not work with recent t-bird versions, but 
it sounds like usenet is what you are 
talking.
I can recommend Albazani.net for a good free server. 
I need to set things up again for mthe machines I am using now. You will have to manually download a 
certificate as I recall to get things working 
correctly for Albazani.
