Installing something from the command line in Linux doesn't have to be 
daunting to a beginner. I find something like

$ sudo apt-get install emacs

to be a lot less daunting than Windows where I need to find the package 
I want on some web site, download it and then launch the installer. Of 
course, if what you want to install in Linux isn't packaged for your 
distribution then I would agree it can get a bit daunting.
