Then, the other way is to do this:
This would make a backup just like the MAC time machine.
use rsnapshot under Linux and make the share available so your wife's 
machine could see it, then she could recover her own files.
Again, you would mount her drive on your linux box, backup it up with 
rsnapshot which uses rsync to make backups, and then she could see your 
samba share to recover any files she wanted.
You can set retention times for backups.
This is how I do a corporate client where the admin wants to be able to 
just click and restore files.
I keep 7 days, 4 weeks, and 12 monthly backups respectively.
