I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04 and after I installed gnome-shell
with
sudo apt-get install gnome-shell
in a terminal.
Before login in I press tab to get to the session button en hit Enter.
With the tab I choose for gnome and after hitting Enter and my password
I than not landed in Unity anymore.
Maybe is this what you are looking for?

Hi,
Is it possible for a blind person to replace gnome with unity? Unity
comes by default on ubuntu, but I want to replace it with gnome without
sighted assistance after the reboot of the system after i install gnome.
