Aix, HPux, Ultrix, Minix, FreeBSD, NetBsd, Open Solaris, Open Indiana, And
Apple OSX are a few examples of "real unix."

It is indeed important to make the distinction. Having said that, I have
heard that it is quite easy for someone who knows Linux to translate their
knowledge to the Unix world. I have also heard that it is not as easy for a
Unix person to move to Linux though for some reason. You could probably do
quite a bit towards learning Unix using Linux by installing the Korn shell
since that is Unix's default. Linux uses Bash or ZSH.

Hi Alex,
Agreed. I think a distinction should be made between Unix and Linux.
Although, similar they are not the same thing, and it should be pointed out
to the unlearned that there is a difference. I am not going to go through
all the specifics here but there is quite a bit of difference between say
FreeBSD and say Fedora Linux.
Cheers!

Before you begin with Fedora though, please be advised that it is not
Unix.
It is Linux. If you want Unix, try FreeBSD or Open Indiana or
something like that. Linux is similar to Unix but it is a different
thing. You might call it Unix's unacknowledged child. Haha
