It is indeed important to make the distinction.  Having said that, I
have heard that it is quite easy for someone who knows Linux to
translate their knowledge to the Unix world.  I have also heard that it
is not as easy for a Unix person to move to Linux though for some
reason.  You could probably do quite a bit towards learning Unix using
Linux by installing the Korn shell since that is Unix's default.  Linux
uses Bash or ZSH.

Agreed. I think a distinction should be made between Unix and Linux.
Although, similar they are not the same thing, and it should be pointed
out to the unlearned that there is a difference. I am not going to go
through all the specifics here but there is quite a bit of difference
between say FreeBSD and say Fedora Linux.

It is Linux.  If you want Unix, try FreeBSD or Open Indiana or
something like that.  Linux is similar to Unix but it is a different 
thing.  You might call it Unix's unacknowledged child.  Haha
