At this point I think gnome is the better choice although if accessibility were up to that of unity 2d in the
current
unity I'd go for that myself. It is just a personal prefference, but I like the unity interface a bit more
than gnome3.
I may change this prefference using gnome more. I've only used gnome3.x for a few hours while I used unity
as my
primary interface for most of a year.
One thing on the gnome side is it requires less system resources than unity. I've gone much further down the
light path
myself, at least for the moment using fluxbox as my primary GUI, and when I want panel applets I launch a
mate session. I
also use xfce although without accessible panels it's not so logical. I even took ratpoison for a testdrive,
but I find it
less efficient than fluxbox because it's hotkeys are like screen or emacs, two keystroke combinations.
As Alex says the best way to decide what is best for you is to have the desktops you are interested in
installed on the
same machine and switch between them, at least until you make up your mind. You may even find that for some
work you find
the one works better for you, and for other tasks another meets your needs best.
At first glance it'd seem that gnome makes more sense until or unless the dash and HUD work well with orca,
but if you
don't use these much or can get by without good spoken feedback then maybe unity gets the job done better for
you.
Stormdragon wrote a zenity-using script that works as a run-dialog. I've only used it with fluxbox where
fbrun isn't
currently accessible, but you could use it with unity I reckon. It won't give you the exact features of the
dash, but may
meet your needs.
While there are still some pretty major accessiblity issues with every alternative but gnome the good news is
that we have
several very usable choices when it comes to Linux GUIs these days, and what is a major issue to some may not
effect
others much in practice.
If you don't depend on the search and completion driven style interfaces like gnome or unity you should
perhaps try Mate.
If you liked gnome2 then Mate'sis a very good choice, fast and now with quite good accessibility It's only
major issue is
that only one panel can be focused by orca. There are a couple other problems that effect users in some
circumstances, but
no show stoppers, and it's likely to get better with each new release.

I use whatever version of Gnome comes with 14.04. I believe it’s
3.10. Works well for me. No complaints. I did have to install the

places extension lets me go to computer, documents, network ETC. If I
want the trash folder and such things, I just enable the desktop in the
gnome-tweak tool and it’s similar to gnome 2.x experience in that
regard. Honestly, the best thing for you to do is to try it out.
Create a virtual machine or just install the gnome desktop and go back
and forth from the lightdm choices as you get to know the desktops. As
for wifi, just install the gnome network manager package and you will
be able to manipulate it all you like. I have this set up at home and
it works well for me. Honestly though, I have Gnome 3.4.2 at work and
find that works well enough for my needs too. Compared to that, Gnome
3.10 is just peachy.

Dear all,
I by mistake had sent this email from my official mailbox and it is not
a member of this list.
So I had to do this double forward to get this through to the list.
Sorry for the trouble.
happy hacking.

Hello all,
I have been off the loop for a few days given my busy schedule on a
project release.
I wish to know if Unity with Ubuntu 14.04 is good enough for real use or
should I continue with Gnome 3.10 or 3.12?
I had found out that notifications in Unity worked more accurately with
Orca and things like setting up wifi or mobile broadband was easier.
Gnome had an advantage of being pretty streight forward with access to
things like system resources and with a plugin I could get the super +
number, unity style application access working.
I however find that locating things like trash or working with wifi or
broadband or getting into using pen drives etc is a bit tricky with
gnome shell 3.10.
So what is the experience of others so far?
dash pain was broken in Unity when I checked it last.
Happy hacking.
Krishnakant.
