I'm attempting to learn and transition to the Colemak keyboard layout,
which is actually a more pleasant experience than I thought it would be.
But here's the problem I'm having. I have set up the keyboard to be able
to switch between the standard US English layout and the Colemak layout.
This works throughout the entire desktop environment, and I am able to
switch easily at the press of a key sequence, both shift keys on MATE
and super+space on GNOME. The problem is that Orca doesn't appear to be
able to use the new layout, or it appears to fail to switch between them
with the rest of the system. A good example is Orca+t, which is supposed
to speak the time. If the standard layout is the default, Orca speaks
the time when I press Orca+t. But if I switch to the Colemak layout,
Orca makes me press Orca+g to speak the time, as the letter g is located
on the Colemak keyboard where the letter t normally is. Additionally, if
I set Colemak as the default layout and reboot the computer, Orca speaks
the time when I press Orca+t in the Colemak layout as expected, but when
I switch to the standard layout, Orca only speaks the time if I press
Orca+f, which is where the letter t is on the Colemak keyboard layout.
This is happening both on MATE and GNOME. Is this some sort of bug, or
is there another explanation for why the Orca keymap doesn't appear to
be switching with the rest of the desktop environment? I will note here
that I attempted to restart Orca, but it still only uses the keymap that
is set as the default layout. Restarting the computer does the same
thing. Thanks for any help.
