I've updated to a more recent if not currently newest build of orca a couple or 3 hours ago. Indeed arrowing is noticeably peppier as you say, seems even better than the build iI was using since shortly after this project was announced day before yesterday I guess it was. I do have to areas where I'm not happy with the experience, one for sure an integral part of the browse/focus working. I still have to either tab out and back in to a combo box to continue to arrow up or down through the options, or alternatively press orca a after each arrow press. This is terribly time wasting when navigating a long list, e.g. a list of speed-dial code options on one of my voip providers' sites. The codes can't be manually edited, nor can one use first char navigation as the first part of the strings never changes, only the last two digits. Also, somewhat related to this, when one switches from tabbing to arrowing in most cases neither does one stay in the same part of the screen/webpage, but neither does one return to the last position where one was using the respective keys, i.e. if I was tabbing and then switch to arrowing if the cursordoes not pick up where I was with the tab then it'd be nice if it would be where ever I was last time I used the arrow keys to move up and down the page, and visaversa. Now I'm taken back to the top of the page, or in some cases a region of the page each time I change from tab to arrows and visa versa. I'm not sure how much of this is the same as before the browse/focus changes were made to orca, and what's new, but hopefully some more efficient navigation would be nice. Maybe the code to hold places would be too slow and take away from the improved performance we are seeing now, but on pages that do not use headings and such it can take a long time to tab through dozens of links and other elements. This is one of the most exciting things to happen with orca in a long time. Looking forward to seeing this in stable releases where the average user will see the improvements, when it's ready of course. Hey guys. Based on the feedback received, I have just committed the following changes to master: * Orca will automatically switch between "focus mode" and "browse mode" * Orca will announce "focus mode" or "browse mode" when it does this for you. It is currently at the end of the presentation of the new location. That way, if you know what the deal is (of course it is in focus mode now), you don't have to listen to Orca tell you. You can just keep browsing or interacting with the widget. * The current keybinding is Orca + A. This will toggle between the two modes. I chose this because we needed something for you to test. And it was the only suggestion I saw proposed by y'all which didn't conflict with existing bindings or result in complaints from someone else. If y'all don't like Orca + A, propose something we all can live with or rebind it to something you can live with. * All the non-perfomant and non-reliable logic about whether or not Orca should really control things is ripped out. Arrowing seems a bit more peppy to me now. I hope you find the same. What I have not committed/done yet: * Playing tones. That's a nice to have. We can add it later. * Documentation. We don't know what the final feature will look like. * Settings. Orca does it automatically. It's easy to toggle off. What would be extremely helpful is testing from you to see what you all think. What is totally broken, what must be changed, etc. In the meantime, I'll see what I can do about the looping, etc. Thanks! --joanie _______________________________________________ orca-list mailing list orca-list gnome org https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/orca-list Visit http://live.gnome.org/Orca for more information on Orca.
