For saving attachments I do the following with the keyboard:
Alt_F10 and arrow-right to the Message menu;
Arrow-down to the attachment option;
Arrowright to the list of include attachments.
Here I can arrow-down for the option to save all. On each attachment I
can arrow-right and after arrow-down for the options OPEN or SAVE AS.
I set in the Edit menu > Preferences the folder where to save attachments.

With attachments though, I had to use mouse (flat review ) and click on
the save button.
Other than that, Thunderbird is just perfect for my needs.
Happy hacking.

I forgot to mention that another standard key you can use in
Thunderbird is the application key which will bring up the context
menu for whatever object you're on, such as a link within a message or
the message itself.

If you have specific questions maybe I or others can help, but I'm
not aware of a getting started or how to for a blind user and
Thunderbird.
Basically, you have your list of accounts, which you can arrow
through using up and down arrow keys. When you're on the account
who's mail you want to read, tab over once to get to your list of
folders and again you can up and down arrow to move through the list
and use left and right arrows to open and close sub folders. When you
get to the folder you want, such as your In Box, tab over once to get
into your list of messages in that folder. There's a Mozilla bug
where this list will get corrupt over time, so you want to be careful
to check your message before moving or deleting anything.
I just use the preview pane to read my messages, and the F6 key will
take you to the top of the message text from the list of messages.
Orca+; (That's a semi-colon.) will read the rest of the message, but
you can also use the arrow keys to navigate around the message.
Your standard Thunderbird short cut keys will work, so when you're in
a message you can delete it with the delete key, move to the next
message with the 'f' key and move to the next unread message with the
'n' key. Sometimes you need to use Orca+backspace to pass these keys
through Orca into Thunderbird.
I hope this helps.

I help a completely blind person who has been getting email with
dedicated software for windows that has stopped working because of
POP credentialling issues. I want to see if I can help them change
to Vinux with ORCA and a supported mail client. I found Thunderbird
a bit daunting in its default state.
I am hoping list members might suggest:
a more keyboard oriented client,
Ways to configure thunderbird to make it easier to use with ORCA,
Or lastly, with apologies, a more appropriate place to explore
Linux mail clients for the blind.
