Hi Rusty,
Depending on the desktop environment you are running there is an
option to logout which closes the current session you are in and
returns you to the login screen. In Unity, which is the default on
Ubuntu, you have to go to the top panel with alt+f10 and there is an
option under, I think it is called users, for logout, shutdown, etc.
Unfortunately, I don't have a Linux box in front of me at the moment
so I can't give you step by step directions on how to do this in
Unity, but it isn't difficult to find. You'll want to explore the top
panel menus anyway to get familiar with them.

OK, I just tried hitting the "circle of friends" key, and typing
gnome-terminal and there it was!
So, I'm installing the gnome shell right now.
but, I don't know about this logging out business.
thanks so much for your help!!!
Rusty
