Re: [orca-list] working with skype

You are correct of course, but there is no point in making big brother's life easier. If someone rather not speak directly on big brother's microphone, i.e. Skype and others, and prefers to not save files directly on big brother's hard disk, i.e. cloud services like Google drive and dropbox, then more power to them.

While a lot of things are technically possible, they are not all easy or practical given the usual level of government incompetence. So it would be silly to make it easy for them.

I understand why people use Skype, but if some of them can avoid it, more power to them.

If governments are all powerful, then why was the US government asking their UN diplomats to play spy and gather silly stuff like frequent flying miles numbers and credit card numbers from top UN officials? Well, the answer is that sometimes things do not work smoothly inside government, and anybody leaving his or her information on top of the desk, will make it that much easier for those who have no respect for privacy nor decency. This is true of course for all governments not just the USA.

Hi
I hate to break it to you, but if you are online at all, you are being monitored whether by your government,
a foreign entity, or simply your ISP. Unless you are sending everything, and I do mean everything, over an
anonymous and encrypted connection, you absolutely will be monitored and even then, you can only control your
end of the process. Example: your message now was just logged, as there are people on this list with a Gmail
address. Nothing you could have done would have prevented this save for encryption, which would have made the
message unreadable to the list. If you're that worried about it, you shouldn't be on listservs, or any other
public forum and you might as well take yourself offline. You will be logged by at least one entity,
friends/relatives will not stop using Skype (it's far more convenient than any SIP provider for most users),
and so you can either use Skype and be part of their online lives or go offline in fear.

Some of us know that every time we use Skype, we're being listened

Hi,

Well put, Alex. I understand people's reasons for using free and open
source software when and where practical, but there are some
applications like Skype that really can't be replaced with a free open
source solution. I have many friends who use Windows, don't give a
hoot about open source, and they use Skype. Point being if I want to
talk with them I must be using Skype for Linux, or I'm not talking to
them because they aren't going to change to some alternative just
because I say so. :D
