control+n starts a new instance of Firefox. It does not open a new tap
in your existing instance of Firefox. I checked, and when I launch a new
instance of Firefox then alt+` does jump me between my two instances of
Firefox.
Like I said, I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 with the latest Firefox and both
control plus the page keys and control+tab take me between my tabs in
Firefox.

Hi Bill,
I am opening them with control+t of course. I didn't know there was
any other way to launch a new tab. :D

How are you opening your tabs?
CTRL+t : CTRL+tab
CTRL+n : ALT+`
