Thank you!
I think the issue is more general than my message indicates; Pidgin is
just where I happened to notice it. There is only one Orca running; not
sure what you mean by multiple orcas? So, this seems to be something
unique to the Suse upgrade process.
Cheers,
Dave H.

Hi,
I just upgraded GNOME from 3.4.2 to 3.63 in OpenSuse 12.2, using the
stable GNOME 3.6 repository, and patching after upgrade. Using this new
setup, I tried to read messages in a Pidgin history, only to discover
that 'orca+f1' through 'orca+f9' no longer work. Also, in-coming
messages are no longer automatically spoken.
Assuming that you don't have any problems related to your upgrade, what
you describe suggests that Orca cannot identify you are in Pidgin.
I have vague recollections of Mike Gorse having a similar problem in his
SUSE environment and I *think* the problem was related to his having
multiple Orcas in his environment.
Orca 3.6.3 and Pidgin work as expected for me.
Take care.
