Ubuntu 10.04 is relatively old, but it's still a supported LTS release.
I would not recommend just upgrading your release though. There have
been too many changes in the accessibility infrastructure, and I suspect
this will result in quite a bit of work to get everything working again.
If you want to upgrade to a later release of Ubuntu, I'd suggest saving
off your home directory and reinstalling.

Try
sudo update-manager
or
sudo do-release-upgrade
from a shell

Hi all,
This machine was working for several months but it suddenly stopped
speaking
a few days ago. When I log in, I can hear the jingle meaning that
logging in
was successful. Then, Orca is launched and displays correctly in
Braille but
it does not speak. All other sounds play correctly.
In orca preferences, at the "speech" tab, speech is enabled but I
can't see
any speech device to select. The list is empty. Before that, I
remember that
Speech Dispatcher was the selected speech device but it seems that Speech
Dispatcher stopped working.
Please, what should I do in order to get a more precise diagnostic of the
problem?
Many thanks in advance. Have a nice day. Christophe Delaunay
