Nothing definite has been set for 12.10 yet.  However, if it does end up being the case that Unity 2D gets dropped then we still have the option of installing and using Gnome Shell. As Gnome Shell is already reasonably accessible I don't see installing Gnome Shell instead of Unity as a huge problem.
