Drive sleds can be a huge help here.  You need a sled track installed in 
the machine and no permanent hard drive to use them.  When you get a 
drive sled set usually the track comes in one box and then you buy one 
or more sleds in other boxes.  You get more than one hard drive and put 
a stable operating system on one hard drive and that's in one sled and 
put an experimental operating system on another hard drive and that's on 
a different sled.  Then you swap sleds out of the machine to either run 
the machine with stable or experimental.  Keys come with the sled tracks 
so  you lock the drive sleds in the tracks before any drive can be used. 
 Drive sleds have come down in price compared to what they were earlier 
too.
