Yeah, this is viable.

I use a virtual machine with Windows XP installed in it to do stuff that 
I can't currently do very well in Ubuntu.

Examples include interacting with flash, reading Microsoft Powerpoint 
slides, scanning mail (I've yet to find a comparable linux solution to 
Windows OCR software) and syncing my iPhone.
