Hi william,
At this moment in time the most accessible way to do it in Unity is via
the run command.
For example, if you want to use the Gnome text editor, gedit, press
alt+f2, type gedit, and enter to launch gedit. Of course, it requires
knowing which programs are installed on your machine, but once you know
that its an easy matter to launch them via run as described above.
