Can a I offer you a different suggestion? I use gmail, the same as you 
do, and I don't even bother with Evolution, Thunderbird, etc. I just log 
into my account via Firefox and read and respond to my e-mail via the 
web interface. I think you would be better off going that route. 
Especially, if you go into options and set it up to display everything 
as straight html. It works pretty well with Orca and Firefox 10.02.
