Which version of Gnome is it running? If it's invoking gnome-shell, be sure
that the libatk-adaptor-schemas (this is the Debian package name, probably
similar in other distributions) is installed.

If it's Gnome panel (as in fallback mode), I'm not sure how accessible it is.

If you don't know what is running, go to a console and use the ps command to
find out.
