I suspect it's that per session craziness which Speech-dispatcher introduced a
while ago: it's probably trying to start a daemon under your user account and
then trying to write to the wrong files for some reason... and failing to open
the audio device for some other reason.
There's a way to have a single system-wide instance run by root to which
clients connect, as I recall.
