Re: [orca-list] Latest Version of Orca

It's hard to give good advice without a lot more data than you provide.
However, I'll take my best shot.

You say you paid for this system, but what you got is unusable. I
surmise from that that you probably have very little in the way of
personal data on that system that you would need to preserve. If that is
so, then the simplest solution is to reformat the hard drive and start
over, using a distribution that's far more likely to give you good
results.

My suggestion to you as a blind user who doesn't know his way around
Linux is to rely on the good expertise of other blind users who've paved
the road for you. Put Vinux on that machine. And, if you paid someone,
surely you didn't pay them to mindlessly give you anything. I presume
you paid them for a usable system. So, have them do it. They may groan
and complain, but the job isn't that big of a deal to someone who knows
what they're doing.

Hey There,

So for the sake of experimentation, I would like to switch my gnome
version back to "gnome.2.32" and my version of Orca to "xdesktop."
Would I need to download specific disks, or will I be able to
accomplish the switch online, via say, something like the "apt-
get?" If I am not mistaken, I believe that some compilation and
some rather radical house cleaning would be necessary. I am willing
to do this, but there might be a bit of a learning curve, because
I paid to have this system put together. Making the needed changes
by my lonesome is going to be a bit of a challenge, but my current
system is all but unusable.

I sincerely appreciate your input here, and I am sorry to further
presume upon your time and didactic energies.

OK, maybe it wasn't stated as clearly as it might have been.

Stay away from gnome-shell 3 and everything that goes with it. It's not
the Linux distro that matters, it's the gnome-shell, and the new
environment we're still debugging. This will not change in days, and
probably not even in weeks. Expect this will be true for months and
months.

So, stick with gnome-2.32. And, stick with the xdesktop versions of
Orca.

Hey There,

Well, after having exhausted all of the corrective or at least
ameliorative options known to myself, my problem with Orca's
incessant crashing remains unabated. I therefore have arrived at
the conclusion that a change is most highly warranted. Either I
dispense with Orca as a screen reader, or I find a new distro of
Linux to run on my system. However, rather than reinventing the
wheel as it were, I believe that I would much rather try a
different version of Orca before resorting to more drastic and
perhaps unnecessary alternatives.

So with this sentiment in mind, might I enquire as to what is the
most recent and hopefully less bug-ridden version of Orca? To
further elucidate the nature of my problem, and hopefully render a
more efficacious response, I should point out that I am currently
running the version of Squeeze Disk that came out of beta back in
the first quarter of this year. Said version of course, came with
its own requisite version of Orca. Now then, I am hoping most
fervently that there exists a more recent version of this speech
package. Such being the case, I can acquire it and hopefully solve
this matter once and for all.

As always, any and all input will be most sincerely appreciated,
and so I thank you dear respondent in advance. Moreover, should
your response turn out to be effectual, I will not only thank you,
but bless you most ardently indeed.
