You're a genius for figuring this out!
Next question: how do I keep my screening from locking and having to
enter my password to unlock it? I think I found a lock screen switch
somewhere but don't know whether this will do the trick.

I found what seems to work 100% of the time on my machine to get to
what used to be the system menu where you can find the shutdown and
logout dialogs. What I do is basically the following:
1. Press Ctrl+Alt+Tab until you hear "Top Panel."
2. Then tab around to the first occurence of "Menu Bar."
3. Now press either left or right arrow key once; nothing will be
spoken.
4. Pressing up or down arrow will now speak the items in the system
menu.
This tactic works every time for me on my Arch Linux system using
Gnome 3.
