Thanks for the responses. I probably will try both and see which works better for me. As far as needing to have GNOME installed, I'm not sure about LXDE, but IIRC, XFCE only needs the normal GTK2 libraries that are needed to make any GTK2-based app run., so all of GNOME shouldn't have to be installed to make it work. It is important, however, to have an at-spi installed to make Orca speak.
