[orca-list] WebKitGtk+ and Epiphany Support: An Impromptu FAQ

Q: I see you've just committed WebKitGtk+ and Epiphany scripts to Orca.
That means it all works, right?
A: No.

Q: Is it time to test and file bugs for the issues I find?
A: No.

Q: What version of WebKitGtk+ will I need if I want to try anyway?
A: The latest, built from master. And probably some patches.

Q: Orca isn't doing such-and-such in <insert WebKitGtk+ app here>.
A: We know.

Q: How can I help with this effort?
A: By pretending you didn't know the scripts were added.

<silly grin>

Hey guys.

I have just committed the beginnings -- emphasis on beginnings -- of the
work we need to do on the Orca side to provide access to WebKitGtk+
content. If I thought I could sneak that fact by y'all, I would not be
writing this message. But I know better. <grin>

We still have a lot of work to do in Orca on this implementation. It's
not ready for feedback. At all. In fact, at this point feedback might
even distract us from working on the implementation.

The reasons I went ahead and committed what I've done are:

1. Mario Sanchez Prada, WebKitGtk+ a11y hacker extraordinaire from
Igalia, will be better able to answer the question "How does Orca work
with WebKitGtk+?" if Orca actually works with WebKitGtk+. Otherwise he
has to guess based on what Accerciser tells him.

2. Ale and I need to look at performance and architecture issues which
take into account future support for WebKitGtk+. That will be easier to
do if said support is not purely hypothetical.

3. I want to get Gwibber working with Orca. I will need to file bugs
against Gwibber. I'd like the Gwibber developers to be able to test
their changes with Orca.

4. Ale and I will be meeting with Mario and other WebKitGtk+ developers
in Sevilla in a couple of weeks and in Boston in November and would like
to have something demonstrate-able.

So as suggested in my impromptu FAQ at the start of this message, if
y'all give us a bit more time to work on this, we'll keep you posted.
And as soon as we're at a point where testing and feedback would be
helpful, we'll announce it.

Thanks for your understanding and patience! Take care.
