Valid point but it was the multiple instances of speech dispatcher
running that caused me to have contention over the alsa device and my
not being able to play any other media files. As soon as I got
speechd down to a single system wide instance, I avoided those
problems completely. For more reasons supporting speech dispatcher
running as a system service, see the recent debate on the speechd
list.
If I can this environment variable issue figured out, it should be
possible to run speech dispatcher either way according to user wishes.
