Hi,
No go. I've changed the gdm variables, they took, and now though can't
log in. Checking the gdm user's home directory no files, but i'm not
seeing any logs to troubleshoot, i'm thinking authentication or
permissions.
I don't know the exact steps you took but did you 'su gdm' to login to
the gdm account before setting the gconf variables?
Also, after configuring the gconf variables for gdm and after adding
gdm to the audio group (if necessary on our system), you should be
able to start gdm without "logging in" to it. At least on my machine
(ArchLinux) I start gdm up from a standard text console. that should
drop you directly into the gdm login screen. where you would login
with your normal (non root) user-id and password. That's where my
write-up on the wiki describes what you should hear. If I recall, the
first time I did this, Orca came up with the config options to choose
speech parameters. I didn't document that part of it very clearly. I
might need to run through this whole process all over again on a new
install to be sure I'm not missing anything.
One other thing; if you are trying to pre-configure Orca with the -t
option while in gdm account under a text environment, then do the Orca
config step immediately following the gconf steps described
previously. the 'orca -t' should build out the .orca directory in
gdm's home directory. On my system, gdm's home directory is in a
strange place -
/var/lib/gdm
Another place to look and maybe get even more confused would be to
look in the gdm related logs. On my machine, they can be found in
/var/log/gdm.
Here I see :0.log, :0-greeter.log and :0-slave.log.
Now, I don't know hardly anything about gnome internals so can't
interpret much from these but you might find some messages in there
which could point out some obvious errors relating to Orca. I think
that's where I started at first on this project to track down problems
with getting orca to work. Like permissions to the audio group and
such things like that.
Hope this additional information can help.
