Another strategy that can work to support running both a bleeding edge
version or current production/stable version would be tu build
packages compatible with your distribution from the git sources. Then
you could just install the package of your choice. I do that with my
ArchLinux system and it's been working great so far. I always have the
standard production package available from my distro and I use the
Arch PKGBUILD script to build local version of orca from git into a
package for my use and I can then install whichever one I want at any
time.
