Hi Jacob,
Seems that I found the cause of the problem.
in the directory /usr/lib3,2 there is a file called libao.so.2 that must
be a symbolic link to libao.so.2.1.3.
In my machine it was linked wrong to libao.2.so.1.3.orig, I don't know why.
As root try the following:
Make a backup of the file /usr/lib32/lib.so.2.1.3.orig
rm /usr/lib32/libao.so.2.1.3.orig
ldconfig
file /usr/lib32/libao.so.2
The last command is to check if the link is correct.
It is working here.
Thanks.

Hi
First, make sure default_driver is set properly in /etc/libao.conf.
If using pulseaudio it should be set to pulse, if using ALSA then it
should be set to alsa. I believe Ubuntu by default sets it to alsa,
which is a bit odd considering they've essentially gotten fully
behind Pulseaudio.
Secondly, I've noticed this when trying to use a 32-bit ibmtts
synthesizer on a 64-bit Linux system. I have all the libraries
correct and installed in both their 32-bit and 64-bit forms, and yet
32-bit use of libao via the sd_ibmtts module doesn't work. A fully
64-bit synthesizer and speech dispatcher module, however, is able to
use libao just fine. Are you trying to run a configuration similar to
this? I haven't yet figured out what the problem is in this case.

The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a
thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot
possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to
get at or repair.
