I can't say about the other two screen readers you mentioned.  Never
heard of SUE and Gnopernicus is dead.  I have a full enough plate
learning about Orca and its internal structure to even bother with the
other screen readers.  I agree with you about using Speakup in a
native text console.  Speakup totally rocks.  In my Arch system, I am
now using gdm full time but still have all my text consoles available
so I have the best of both worlds.  If I have problems with Orca, I
just do a Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to dump my current gnome session and it
drops me back into my gdm login and it talks these days.  You can
modify your user gnome settings to re-enable the Ctrl-Alt-backspace
key.  I forget right off the top of my head at the moment but I did it
a while back and I'm sure glad I did.
