So far in a very quick look at the source used in Ubuntu Karmic (haven't 
gone to the site to pull latest version) I would not be suprised about 
threading.  It uses one of three frontends, one of two backends, and 
possibly dbus depending on how it is called.  In this case it is using a 
gtk frontend, a devkit backend, and dbus is involved somewhere along the 
line.  As I recall it is trying to update the screen with some percentages 
etc while writing the usb disk and this appears to be where it freezes.  I 
don't think I have a spare usb stick at the moment but I will continue to 
look at things and see what I can find to do some testing.
