I tend to use run command (alt_f2). If I am uncertain whether the run 
dialog has appeared, I use backspace and listen for the beeps to confirm 
that it is there. I'm not sure but I think if you start it from a 
gnome-terminal (even using & to put orca in the background) then I think 
orca will exit when you exit the gnome-terminal (close the window).
