Re: [orca-list] New to the list, interested in migrating to Ubuntu

Ok...

go with vinux, though I like ubuntu orca is much more responsive in vinux.

there are several apps for audio, just type sudo /usr/bin/gnome-app-install into a terminal and brows through the software, be sure to select "all availible" in the combo box you will find.

Subject: [orca-list] New to the list, interested in migrating to Ubuntu

Hello guys,

First, thanks so much for this list. Seems to be a very friendable comunity to discuss Linux related issues and, most importantly, when this has connection with Orca.

As the subject suggests, I'm planning to migrate my whole life to Ubuntu. I've tried the install inside windows just for testing purposes. I've noticed that the system response was pretty fast in many applications, but for (possibly obvious) reasons, Orca did not respond fast... But, for the few things I've tried, I found the interface very useful, and Ubuntu seems to offer the most essential tools for office, entertainment and internet.

I'm now willing to make a backup of some important data I have on Windows and starting the new system from scratch, but I need some advices.

First, where can I obtain some form of manual on how to use Orca at its fullest, the Gnome desktop, keyboard commands of both Orca and the system and similar stuff?

Secondly, my concerns are about multimedia production, especially audio. Here, I use Sound Forge for transferring productions I make on my keyboard for use with environments like Pro Tools on other studios, but later I'm planning to build a studio myself. I'm a singer, songwriter and keyboardist, but we can go further on this in the future if you like. And in some cases, I use CD Architect 5.2 as a CD mastering tool. What are the best options in this department for Ubuntu and, if there are not many, what should I take into consideration if I decide to use Wine to run these programs?

Thanks in advance for any tips and suggestions. They are of big importance to me, because I'm planning to leave Windows soon.

Currently I'm using Windows XP Service Pack 3, AMD Athlon X2 4000, an HD with 80 GB for the system and a SATA HD with 500gb for storing music, and other things not related to system. Two GB of RAM.

Again, thanks in advance for all the input.

Best regards,

Edu Camargo.
