Re: [orca-list] Cursor Tracking, Orca, and Braille

Hi Teresa:

Aha - so, it sounds like what you're doing is using the flat review commands to navigate the content. The flat review will only review the visible text on the window.

Orca's flat review feature was not designed as the primary operating mode for Orca. Instead, the focus tracking mode is the preferred (and default) mode. With the the focus tracking mode, you navigate an application as any user would -- you'd use the built in keyboard navigation techniques for the application. So, for Firefox, you'd use the arrow keys, page up/down keys, the built-in 'find' mechanism of Firefox, etc.

BrlTTY apparently has some features to allow you to emulate keyboard keystrokes from the braille device itself, but I've never been quite able to figure out exactly how to make it work. I came pretty close recently, but never got there fully.

If someone on this list has some tips for how people can use their braille display to arrow and page around the content, please let us know. We can try to document it on the WIKI. In addition, if there is something Orca is currently doing to prevent you from doing this, please also let us know and we can try to enable it.

Hi, will,

I'm using a Braille Lite 40, and I'm reading with the advance bars. I
can't go past the bottom of the window, and sometimes I just have to use
the cursor-routing keys above the display characters. However, when I
press the bar to advance, I hit the tool bar at the top of the window,
and the text does not continue. It repeats the previous screen of text.

I've sometimes successfully routed the cursor, then pressed numpad minus
to route the mouse pointer. This doesn't always work, and it also means
navigating past the toolbar, address bar, and other window objects
before I get to the text.

Thanks,
Teresa

Hi Teresa:

How are you navigating the web pages (i.e., what physical action on what
device are you performing)?

Hello, folk,

I'm attempting to read web pages in firefox with Braille and Orca. It
seems the Braille tracks the mouse pointer. Is there any way to have it track the caret? If not, how can I scroll past the bottom of the window
or scroll the page down using Braille?

thanks,
Teresa
