eSpeak has a voice "en-us" which should sound more American than the
standard "en" voice.  It has some improvements in the current version
of eSpeak (1.40) over previous versions.

If you identify specific "idiosyncrasies" with it, please tell me. 
Perhaps I can improve it.

You test eSpeak by using if from a command window, eg:

espeak -v en-us -f textfile
