Cool, you can also disable gdm in rcconf.

gnome.  If you go ahead and let gnome come up with gdm, you can login
without speech and orca will startup once you have gone in anc
configured it to startup automatically at login.  But I like having
speech when I login so I do that through speakup.

Yes, I log in at a console with brltty since it's my primary access to
my box and programs, but when I log into gnome, I simpley run the gdm
init script:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
(I set it up to auto log in), which is good for a home desktop... And
probably couldn't do much harm if it was a laptop or something, because
you have to actually log in first before you can invoke the script. I
guess if someone else has enough rights they could get into your account
through their user account. But then again if they have access to sudo
they could probably sudo passwd yourusername
I dunno, but works for me...
