Re: [orca-list] Insert Mode Toggle

Hi Steve:

There are some things we might consider here:

1) http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=536827 - Provide configuration GUI option to set the Orca key/modifier. This would allow you to more easily redefine the Orca key to something else. Right now, you can change the Orca modifier key, but it requires hand editing your ~/.orca/user-settings.py or ~/.orca/orca-customizations.py files.

2) http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=373387 - Users should be able to lock/unlock the "Lock" modifier even if Caps Lock is the Orca modifier. While this bug talks about the Caps Lock key, the solution proposed is that a double tap of the key will let the key pass through.

After further testing, I conclude that the insert cannot be used nor
bypassed with Orca's bypass key. The bypass key passes through for
other keys but not the insert key <bummer>. I vaguely recall
something about this now that it comes back to me. But I did find
another way to turn insert mode on and off though more awkward. I can
use the flat review keys to find the "Insert" on the status line and
then use the numpad-slash key or left click to toggle the word.
Recycling flat review mode will expose the new word. It toggles
between Insrt and Over. I did this in Writer; haven't tried this in
gedit but am willing to bet this might be the same.

I've been noticing that in the general purpose text editor, gedit and
with Open Office Writer that the insert key doesn't seem to toggle
insert mode for the application. Is that because the insert key
serves as the "Orca" modifier key? If that be the case, how can we
toggle insert mode on and off in such applications as I mentioned
above? I know for a fact that the word "INS" on the status lines of
these applications never changes when I press the insert key and when
typing, I never get into over-write mode.

I'm using the desktop standard layout with the latest git pull of Orca
from this past weekend.

Thanks for any tips here.
