Haha, I agree, it's definitely not as good as the mac. However, Mac is not free like linux. And to be fair to the ubuntu (and other distribution) developers, I don't think there's an operating system as good as the mac... Getting back to orca... I had the same problem, I fixed it by enabling the root account, then loging in as root through gdm login screen (not the terminal) and starting orca that way. I also run all admin apps through the root account. Hope this helps.
