Hi
Actually Will, while you're completely right about Acrobat's issues,
that's not what Bill is experiencing here. What's happening is the
incompatibility between 64-bit GNOME and 32-bit GTK applications in
Linux where accessibility is concerned, since the 64-bit accessibility
modules (like any other library) will not load with a 32-bit
application in Linux, such 32-bit apps are not accessible. There are
ways to work around it by manually getting the required modules and
putting them in the right place, but even then trying to mix and match
these modules, both 64 and 32 and given the gail and atk modules are
the same otherwise, can make a system very unstable and can introduce
other oddities.
It's a can of worms indeed, just a different can of worms in this case.

Hi Bill:
PDF accessibility is a can of worms. The discussion flares up here
from time to time, with the main results being the same: 1) Adobe
has some work to do, and 2) Evince seems like the best place to
invest in for an open source accessible PDF viewer. We need a
qualified person to step up to take control of the Evince task.
In the mean time, you can kind of make Acroread limp along, but the
a11y support is somewhat suboptimal: http://live.gnome.org/Orca/Acroread

Hi.
I'm trying to improve my listening skills, so I thought I'd use Orca
to listen to a few books. I have some books in PDF format, but
Acrobat is not accessible to Orca. I pulled up Accerciser, and
Acrobat isn't even listed as an application. Is this because I'm
running 64-bit Ubuntu, and Acrobat is 32? Is there a more accessible
PDF reader?
Thanks,
Bill

The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a
thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot
possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to
get at or repair.
