Re: [orca-list] New to the list, and curious.

Hello,
I personally use the viavoice system for output on my desktop running linux (this is a commercial synthesiser which sounds very much like eloquence). If you want to go entirely with free software then espeak in my mind is by far the best free synth and isn't far behind viavoice.

What is it I find about viavoice which is better than espeak? I don't fully know myself, I just find I can listen to viavoice slightly faster (this is how close the two are for me). The differences I notice most between viavoice and espeak are that viavoice has a smoother (I think smoother is the term best describing what I mean) sounding voice and I think there are some slightly different pronounciations. Could the sound of espeak's voice be made a little closer to viavoice's? How much work would be involved (eg. just modifying a voice data file or would it need the original sounds rerecording)?

For those not happy with any of the free solutions then as I have said there is viavoice but there is also software dectalk and the cepstral voices (so hopefully there should be something which should satisfy everyone, particularly for those wanting english voices).

I've heard people have a problem with understanding the Festival

There is a Windows SAPI5 version of eSpeak, so you can try it out on
Windows and with Windows screen-readers. Download and install the
espeak-1.40.02-win version from:
http://espeak.sourceforge.net/download.html

eSpeak doesn't claim to sound human, but I hope its English voice is
easily understandable (perhaps after getting used to it).
