Re: [orca-list] Installing Debian on the EEE PC

Hi their. OK, well, we then have to figure out what customizations they
did to make Gnome not work on the EEE PC. The reason why I suggest this
is because I'm sure that I'm not the only person that wishes to run Debian
on it. One thing I do know for a fact is that they run Xfce which is not
accessible. However, I don't see why it won't be possible to install a
standard Debian install on it. Like I said before, I do have a lot of
other machines, so SSH would not be a problem for me at all. If memory
serves me correctly, it shouldn't be that hard to rebuild the standard
install and just include drivers for the specific network interfaces that
it uses. memory wouldn't be a problem, as I plan to get 2GB of RAM.
Barring the EEE PC completely, any Netbooks that any of you can recommend?
Because I know that this is certainly not the only one out there. I was
attracted by its size and specifications.

Hi Erik,
well, unfortunately the Debian version for the Eee doesn't have Brltty
or any accessibility software, so you can forget it really. The
installer for the "normal" Debian doesn't recognice the network
interfaces of the Eee, so you can only perform a minimum installation.
There's a page in the Wiki that describes how to install packages that
will allow you to use the network interface and such, but that never
worked out for me. Of course, you could ask a sighted person to install
Debian Eee for you, but they made some customizations to Gnome so I
wouldn't be surprised if Orca won't work. There's also a Ubuntu version
for the Eee that was accessible, but in the latest release they also
changed the desktop so Orca won't work anymore. If you wanna get a
laptop to run Linux on, I wouldn't recommend the Eee for you, at least
not yet. Maybe Eee drivers will be included in the normal distributions,
maybe not, sorry!
Robin
