Hi,

just a gues, do you run pulseaudio?
If so, check /etc/speech-dispatcher/modules/ and look into the file for 
your synth to set it up to pulse, if possible.

Here on my debian lenny, i have a newer version of speech-dispatcher, 
there you can set it up in the speechd.conf file globaly.
But here is no pulse running.

Pulse is running on ubuntu for instance.
