Hi, try the spd-conf command and set up your speech-dispatcher.
Another change you need to make is in the
/etc/speech-dispatcher/speechd.conf for using pulse instead of alsa
because intrepid is using pulse by default. unless you make this
change you will not be able to run speech-dispatcher. I have not been
able to remove pulse altogether. on the other hand if you want to use
only alsa install alsa-oss etc but beware if speech-dispatcher
automatically with alsa it will disable the use of gnome-speech i.e.
you will not have any output from orca unless you start using
speech-dispatcher. in other words it is at present a case of 'either
gnome-speech or speech-dispatcher'.
Thanks,
Aruni.

Hi,

edit /etc/defaults/speech-dispatcher so that speech dispatcher starts as
a service.
then restart, afterwards, typing spd-say hello should work.

Good luck.

Hello all,
I finally decided to go ahead and try Speech-dispatcher, given that it
seems it might be able to solve the problems I'm having.
I am using Ubuntu 8:10. I installed Speech-dispatcher and the
python-speechd package using aptitude (apt-get etc...) and followed the
rest of the instructions on the Orca wiki. Speech-dispatcher doesn't
work. When I type "spd-say something" it says that SD wasn't able to
open. What could I do? I double-checked everything and I think I
configured everything correctly...
If I type "speech-dispatcher" on a terminal window, it tells me that it's

unable to start because it can't find a configuration file, which is
supposed to be in a subdirectory of /home/username/.speech-dispacher. The

file actually doesn't exist, so I don't know...
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Ignasi
