Hi,

edit /etc/defaults/speech-dispatcher so that speech dispatcher starts as
a service.
then restart, afterwards, typing spd-say hello should work.

Good luck.

Hello all,
I finally decided to go ahead and try Speech-dispatcher, given that it seems it might be able to solve the problems I'm having. I am using Ubuntu 8:10. I installed Speech-dispatcher and the python-speechd package using aptitude (apt-get etc...) and followed the rest of the instructions on the Orca wiki. Speech-dispatcher doesn't work. When I type "spd-say something" it says that SD wasn't able to open. What could I do? I double-checked everything and I think I configured everything correctly... If I type "speech-dispatcher" on a terminal window, it tells me that it's unable to start because it can't find a configuration file, which is supposed to be in a subdirectory of /home/username/.speech-dispacher. The file actually doesn't exist, so I don't know...
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
