Hi all, well I took Ubuntu for a very good test drive, and, although I like
it, I have a couple of comments and possibly some urgent help.
1. I can't believe that a blind person can't perform administrative tasks as
Orca doesn't speak when logged in as root, even if you did so via terminal
using "sudo -i", without quotes. I understand that it's to do with the
At-Spi, but couldn't this be fixed at all? I tried following some
instructions on some forum post, and for one I couldn't save the changes,
and, in one case, I got a "permission denied" message.
2. If we could get Orca to speak when logged in as root, we have to run Orca
in text mode, correct? If so, then the keyboard doesn't respond to Orca at
all, or should that be the other way round. It just asks me to select a
desired voice, gives me the language and appropriate accent, the words
"select choice", and that's it. Again can this be fixed at all? I can run
Orca using the standard Gui fine.
And some urgent help please? If I do need to use the command line tool
Terminal a lot, then I think the only way is to do lots of reading and maybe
attempt to use my BrailleNote mPower as a bluetooth display so I can "feel"
the output shown by Terminal. As I'm moderately deaf I can't always follow
along what speech is saying, particularly in command line tools. So, I guess
the question is, how can I get started?
Sorry for the ranting and the urgent help, but if I want to get the most out
of Ubuntu using Orca then I guess this is the place to ask. So thanks very
much for the help in advance, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes, from a Ubuntu fan, Chris.
