Hi.  Your first mistake was building gnome-speech from source in Hardy.  After you installed Cepstral David, 
you should have done

sudo apt-get install gnome-speech-swift

Debian as well as Ubuntu have a method that lets you just install a gnome-speech driver without rebuilding.
Note this only works after you install and register your voice.  Since you have now built gnome-speech from 
source, you have a broken system.  Ubuntu Hardy's gnome-pspeech package was modified for pulseaudio.  This 
change was specific to Hardy.
