Sorry to hear about your troubles.  :-(

Please note that these instructions are for Ubuntu Hardy only, so if  
you are using another distribution, the results might be unpredictable.  
 For logging into a desktop session as root - that's not enabled by  
default on Ubuntu.  I'm also not sure why the creation of a ~/.orbitrc  
file for root would have any effect on the ability to log in.

Were you ever able to log in as root on your Hardy box?
